Who we are

The Canyon Space Team is a nonprofit company exploring the fields of propulsion and aerospace vehicle design for private and commercial use.Our number one objective is to develop a team with the right skills, financing, and organization to pursue and win the X-Prize®. We are based primarily in the Seattle, Washington area and draw most membership from within the state.

Our path to achievement

We have built both gas and liquid fueled rocket engines and associated test stand and control systems. We have also performed preliminary design and flight simulation for a vehicle that could carry several hundred pounds
(the mass of 3 people) to 100 km and return safely to Earth, be refurbished, and re-flown. Our design is based on an in depth study of aerospace
research with a close look at the X-15 rocket plane. During the past year the nearly 30 person team has segmented into engine, controls, and administrative functions. At this time we are engaging in parallel development paths for a sub-scale supersonic vehicle, a man-rated subsonic vehicle, and the appropriate engines and control systems for those vehicles. More on the engine and vehicle teams is available on the Activities and Projects page.
The three core functions are covered more in depth at the Organizational page.

Why we are doing this

Every single member of the team wants to 'push the envelope' of the aerospace arts. But the frontier we aim to surmount is not technology
-we are citizens of the nation that landed men on the moon, and has pushed probes beyond the bounds of the solar system - rather, the frontier is cost and reliability. The technology and hardware for space flight is now widely available but not cheap. Turning the aerospace paradigm on ear, the team has the goal of winning the X-Prize® not with the most technologically sophisticated vehicle possible, but rather the most affordable one.
As necessity is the mother of invention, the level of resources available to the team requires us to pursue the most affordable avenue to success.

We are excited to be building a talented top caliber team that brings together enthusiasm and experience to make the best of current technology and step out where no purely private venture has gone before, space. To get there will be a team effort, and we hope you will support or even join us in this grand adventure.
